Most families don't need it. If your home internet is Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, fiber, or any normal cable or DSL provider, your Hub works out of the box for everything: family location, photos, smart home, and remote access from your phone.
A handful of providers like T-Mobile Home Internet and Starlink share one connection across many customers. For those families, we add a small relay so your Hub still reaches you when you're away. The installer checks your internet for you and lets you know if it applies.
